In the words of my friend Tropical Joss, “November didn’t happen.” Don’t get us started on it almost being Christmas, either.
At the beginning of November, we had a friend visit all the way from Washington, DC. The last time we saw one another was in Italy six years ago and it was nice to see that neither of us has changed where it counts. Plus, it’s always fun showing off your city to visitors, especially when it’s as pretty and green as Vancouver.
At the beginning of November, we hit up Tchami (for the 5th time?!) with our friends. He played at Celebrities with DJ Yurie and Noizu opening for him. Father Tchami never, ever disappoints with his musical sermons.
At the end of November, we went to a very memorable show at Open Studios in East Van. Justin Martin, co-founder of the house music label Dirty Bird, graced us with a 5-hour set! I don’t know how to put the rarity of this event into words. House legends never play all night in Vancouver. When they are visiting, they almost always have a contract with Blueprint Events, and BP throws them into the super clubby Celebrities or the broom closet-sized MIA. Open Studios was a breezy, intimate setting and its audience was mature n’ funky. Bonus: it’s located next to a bakery so it smelled like fresh bread all night.
This month we’re locking down a date for our wedding–August 1, 2020!–and enjoying the holiday szn with friends & fam.
Without further ado: music. I think this month’s mix has some nice variety. There’s the usual house music, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve also got trap from Troyboi, indie music from MØ/Foster the People, trance from Deadmau5 , and melodic bass from Hayden James.
I have about 4-5 favourite songs this month, but if I have to pick I would go for the indie-pop track “Blur” by MØ featuring Foster the People. Techno house track “Got This” by Mason Maynard is Phil’s fave this month.
That’s it for November updates & music. See you in the new year for fresh updates and hopefully a more timely mix!
